A Short Stay Unit is a location within the Emergency Department where patients who are expected to go home will move to while their condition stabilises, or they receive observations for a short and fixed period of time (for example, six hours). When patients move into this location they are considered an admission and the duration of time they are in this location does not count towards the ED Length of Stay target.
